Confirmed interest before the first conversation.

  1. The firm selected you

The firm reviewed your full public bio from your firm bio page and LinkedIn and selected you as someone they would like to meet about the role.

  2. The firm asked Suited to contact you

You receive an invitation only after a specific firm confirms its interest in connecting with you. It is a warm invitation directly from the firm, not a speculative recruiter pitch.

  3. You decide what happens next

Decline, ask for more information, or authorize an introduction.

How to read a headhunter email.

You’ve received this email before. Here is what each line means.

This is what lateral hiring looks like now.

Firms didn’t like the status quo any more than you did.

  1. 1

A search by class year and practice group returned your name, and a few hundred others.

  2. 2

“Working with” may mean they have a generic fee agreement with the firm. It may also mean they do not and want to use you to try to get one.

  3. 3

The fee is a percentage of your annual salary. I will do and say anything to get you to a yes.

  4. 4

Once you give me your resume, I will shop it to other firms where I have placement agreements. If you move to any of them in the next 12 months, I get a fee.

  5. 5

There is no Friday deadline. Urgency raises reply rates.

  1. 1

The firm reviewed your experience and believes you are a great candidate for an open role. They asked Suited to invite you to connect.

  2. 2

They saw a consolidated summary of your professional background and want to meet you.

  3. 3

Reply and get connected directly with the individual leading the search at the firm. Members of the Suited team are available to discuss and answer questions in advance. If this isn’t the right move, tell us what interests you and we will only contact you when something matches.

The Suited app for passive candidates

Right role, wrong firm? Just want to track the market? Set a mandate.

You do not need to be actively looking to stay informed. Every open role a contingency recruiter emails you about is already tracked on Suited. Setting a mandate lets you ignore cold recruiter emails without missing market opportunities.

  1. 1

    Set your mandate

Your mandate is your confidential instruction to Suited: target practice mix, geography, goals, and dealbreakers. Firms never see it.

  2. 2

    Passively monitor or actively search

Select passive monitoring to track exact market matches, or direct Suited to work a targeted move on your behalf.

  3. 3

    Suited diligences the market

Continuous searches of open associate roles across the NLJ 500, as well as thousands of in-house counsel opportunities, tracked against your mandate. Includes early look and exclusive roles from Suited clients.

  4. 4

Hear from Suited only when it matters

Most weeks, nothing happens. That is the point. You receive a concise briefing only when a role genuinely fits.

  5. 5

    Engage on your terms

Review complete firm data and talk confidentially with the Suited team before authorizing any release of your identity.

FAQs

If a firm invited you

01Why did I receive an email from Suited?

A firm reviewed your public professional bio sourced from your firm bio page and LinkedIn and wants to connect with you about an open role. Suited is an extension of their direct sourcing team and they asked us to contact you.

02How is a Suited invitation different from headhunter outreach?

When a headhunter emails you, the firm usually doesn’t know the email was sent, your qualifications haven’t been checked, and your resume can be shopped to any firm that might pay a fee. When Suited emails you, the hiring manager or lead recruiter at the firm has already reviewed your public bio against a live role and asked Suited to make the approach. The briefing that follows shows where the role falls short as well as where it fits.

Your experienceBlasted to firms without your permission, so the recruiter can claim a fee if you ever talk to them.Used by the firm in advance to select you to connect before wasting your time.
The incentivePaid contingency on any quick transaction.Paid on subscription by the firm. The advice doesn’t depend on your yes.
03Does the firm know who I am?

Only based on public information. Firms do not have access to any portal or system to see any information you provide or even to know you signed up.

04What happens if I decline or don’t respond?

If you decline, Suited lets the firm know. Passing on one role has no effect on future invitations. If the role was right but the firm wasn’t, set a mandate and tell Suited what would be.

Using the Suited app

05Will I miss out if I ignore cold recruiter emails?

No, as long as your mandate is set. Cold recruiter outreach pitches roles from the same open market Suited monitors across the NLJ 500, and every open role is read against your mandate. The only exception: retained search firms acting directly for a client, which always name the firm upfront.

06Does Suited actively help me move, or just monitor?

Both. While you monitor, you hear from Suited only when something matches your mandate. When you decide to move, Suited works the mandate actively: full briefings on every relevant role, and direct introductions on your timeline.

07Can I join Suited without an invitation from a firm?

Yes. Request access, set a mandate, and Suited monitors every role in the market against it. You hear from Suited only when something genuinely matches.

08Can my current firm see I’m here?

Suited helps firms search market-wide to pre-select candidates and request to connect based on public information, regardless of whether you’re using Suited. If you set a mandate and use the app as a candidate, there is no profile: it is fully confidential unless you request an introduction to a specific firm.

09Does Suited charge me?

No. You pay nothing and you sign nothing.

10How is this different from a recruiter?

A recruiter is paid a contingency fee by the firm. That is a real conflict of interest with how much you weigh whether the role fits you. Because Suited works with so many firms at both a campus and lateral level, the incentive is to get the best people to the places they are going to be successful. Suited’s incentive is the same as yours: only the roles worth your time get a briefing.

11What is a briefing?

A research deliverable on a specific role at a specific firm: the role and team, the compensation range, the firm’s standing and size, what aligns with your experience and mandate, and the considerations worth weighing before you engage. The way you would diligence a counterparty, applied to the firm.

12Who follows up if a role is interesting?

A member of the Suited team. Discussions are confidential. Suited follows up only on roles you want to discuss.

13What if I’m not sure I want to move?

Most attorneys on Suited aren’t looking to move when they join. Set the mandate, read briefings as they come, and discuss the ones worth discussing. The diligence is yours whether you move this year or in three.

14What is a mandate?

Your confidential instructions to Suited: the practice mix, geography, goals, and dealbreakers that would make a move worth considering. Firms never see it. Suited monitors the market against it and sends a briefing only when a role matches.

15Who sees my mandate?

The Suited team that researches roles against it. Firms never see any information you provide unless and until you ask Suited to put you forward for a specific role and authorize the release of specific information.

16Is Suited a recruiter?

No, Suited works in two specific functions. For firms, we operate as an extension of their lateral recruiting teams, identifying candidates based on public professional data and then contacting them at the firm’s request. For candidates, we do the opposite. We track and research open roles across the market to match them against the candidate’s professional goals. Candidates pay us nothing; firms pay us subscription fees, not placement fees.

However you arrived, the next step is yours.

Respond to the invitation in your inbox, or set a mandate and let the market prove itself to you.
